PAST EVENTS
December 8th-12th, 2008- World Youth Conference in Rome:
Our executives had the privilege to be invited to the world youth conference in Rome, held in December of 2008. Youth from all over the world convened at this conference to discuss ways in which the Italian government can help promote Italian language and culture. The youth were divided into sub groups focusing on different aspects of language and culture. Thereafter a document was constructed illustrating each countrys proposal on further assistance from Italy that was then be present to the Italian government.
June 24th, 2009- Caboto Day Parade:
The FGIC participated in the Caboto day events that took place at Loretto College. Students were awarded scholarships for their artwork and projects that they had completed regarding Giovanni Caboto. This event was very important to us because it gave us a chance to see our younger generation excited about learning Italian heritage and honouring the great Giovanni Caboto.
June 25th, 2009- BBQ for Abruzzo:
The FGIC, in conjunction with the International Languages Teacher Association, hosted a bbq to help the victims of Abruzzo. We served up hot dogs, hamburger and porchetta along with gelato and drinks to all our guests who attended. There was music, a coin toss and a book sale to keep our guests entertained. We also held a raffle where many sponsors from across the GTA donated gift bags and prizes to be raffled off. All proceeds went to help the victims of the earthquake.
August 31st, 2009- Spaghetti and Movie night:
This event was held at Club Simbario on Monday, August 31st, 2009 at 7:00pm. Our memebers/guests feasted on pasta, had a glass of wine, watched a movie and enjoyed each others company. This event turned out to be a huge success, it was our first solo event and all our members/guests came out to support us and had a wonderful time. It was a great night full of Italian music, food, movies and great conversation among friends.
September 12th, 2009- Soccer tournament:
Our soccer tournament was a huge success. It was held at the soccer field at Dante Alighieri with the first game starting around 11:00am. We couldnt have asked for better weather, the sun was shinning, the temperature was perfect and we were surrounded by all our friends. At around 12:30pm we took a break from playing andenjoyed a delicious lunch, pizza from Pizza nova. After our lunch the games started again, heading into the finals were the FCI soccer team and the Dufferin & Lawrence Team. After a great game, the FCI soccer team won the game, receiving medals and a trophy, as they are our first Annual Torneo di Calcio winners!
September 18th-20th, 2009- Conference in Chicago:
Members of our executive were invited to be guests at a CGIE conference discussing the Italian language in Canada. They had the chance to hear what politicians had to say about promoting the Italian culture and language and trying to involve the youth as much as possible. Our members were given the opportunity to express themselves, let people know that our federation exists, and learn and speak to members in the society who can give them advice and guidance.
September 20th, 2009- Abruzzo Walk:
On September 20th, more than 400 participants, including families, seniors, students, community leaders and our very own members of the FGIC, joined forces for the Walk for Abruzzo a 4km walk at Boyd Conservation Area that raised funds and awareness for the victims of the earthquake that struck 49 towns and cities in Abruzzo in April. The event, organized by the Abruzzo Earthquake Relief Fund (AERF) and generously sponsored by the Carpenters Union, also featured a family-themed barbeque and a very special surprise visit by Toronto Raptors stars Andrea Bargnani and Marco Bellinelli who thanked the crowd for their efforts and signed autographs for adoring fans.
October 16th, 2009- Briscola night:
The briscola tournament was held at Club Simbario with the first rounds of games starting at 7:30pm; food and beverages were available for our members and guests to enjoy. For those that did want to take part in the briscola games, the buy in was $10.00. After many rounds we finally had a winner who took home the grand prize..
October 24th, 2009- Luna Piena:
Our first ever Halloween party had an amazing turn out. This event was held on October 24th, 2009 at the Solardome Banquet Hall. We offered a full sit down dinner and an open bar. Halloween costumes were required. At the end of the night we crowned a best-dressed female and a best-dressed male with a prize. The party went well into the night with all our guests dancing the night away. Everyone had an amazing time and all our guests came dressed to impress!
November 15th, 2009- Constitution/elections:
The FGIC held its first General Assembly Meeting on November 15th, 2009 at 6:30pm in the Lower Gallery at the Columbus Centre. At this meeting the assembly voted on a proposed constitution and participated in the election process. Memberships were collected before the meeting began. Congratulations to the new executive council and thank you to our members for showing your support.
December 10th, 2009 -Serata con gli Anziani:
This event was held at Villa Colombo where the FGIC Executive hosted an evening of various activities including: briscola, a music sing-a-long, and a traditional dining experience with the elders of Villa Colombo. This event was a great success, the executives and the residents of Villa Colombo enjoyed themselves a great deal and we hope that we will be able to visit them again soon.
December 11th, 2009- Charity Event for Africa:
The FGIC hosted a FIFA and card game night at Club Simbario on Friday, December 11th, 2009. There was food and drinks available for all and our members were asked to bring in a canned food item to donate to the local womens shelter. All of the proceeds that were raised from this event went toward a donation to World Vision in helping to build a well in Africa.
